MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team fell at Montclair State University, 1-0, in non-conference action on Friday night.
The Red Hawks netted the lone goal in the 37
th minute and made it stand in a back-and-forth contest. Montclair State finished with a 15-12 edge in shots but just eight combined attempts were on frame. The Garnet had plenty of opportunities to find the back of the net, earning six corner kicks on the evening, but they were not able to get on the board.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams struggled to generate consistent pressure in their attacking end, with Swarthmore holding a slim 3-2 advantage in shots through the first 35 minutes of play. However, the Red Hawks broke through on their third shot of the night in the 37
th minute. Montclair State put in a header at the net front off a service from the right side to take a 1-0 lead.

Adrien Marcelli had a strong chance to even it up in the final seconds of the first half but his shot just missed the upper right corner of the goal and went wide. The teams went back-and-forth again throughout the second period with the Red Hawks earning a narrow 10-8 edge in shots. The Garnet almost scored the equalizer again in the 84
th minute on a shot from
Dante Cholmeley-Jones. The ball nearly snuck in under the crossbar but the Montclair State keeper leaped up and punched it over for an impressive stop.
- In the final minutes, Swarthmore pressed to score the tying goal. Marcelli had another chance in the box but put it high. The Garnet also had two corner kicks in the closing minute but were unable to record another shot.
