GLASSBORO, N.J. – The No. 22 Swarthmore College field hockey team dropped a non-conference game at No. 14 Rowan University by a 3-1 score on Wednesday evening.
The Profs opened the scoring in the second quarter and led 1-0 at halftime.
Annika Hoyer got the Garnet on the board in the third, tying the game with her first collegiate goal. However, Rowan answered with back-to-back tallies and went on to take the victory.
Swarthmore placed 12 of its 14 shots on the cage, but the Profs' goalkeeper stood tall and made 11 saves during the contest. The two sides combined for 21 penalty corners.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams struggled to generate consistent pressure in the opening period with the Garnet recording the only two shots of the frame. Both came on the same possession and were stopped by the Rowan goalie.
- Swarthmore mustered just one shot in the second quarter and it was turned aside by the keeper. The Profs registered their first shot of the night in the 23
rd minute and
Cassandra Conklin made the stop for the Garnet. Rowan broke through on its second shot in the 26
th minute, dribbling down to the right post before sending a pass across the goal mouth that was tapped in. The Profs maintained the one-goal edge into the intermission.
- Rowan started the second half strong with three shots and three penalty corners within the initial five minutes but the margin remained at one. Swarthmore then struck to even the score in the 37
th minute.
Erin Coyle dribbled into the scoring area and blasted a shot that was saved by the goalkeeper. Hoyer corralled the rebound with her back to the cage before turning and firing the ball past the goalie to tie it at one.
- The deadlock was short-lived, however, as the Profs regained the upper hand just 20 seconds later on a high back-hand shot in the scoring area. The Garnet peppered Rowan with seven shots over the remainder of the third quarter but they were unable to beat the Profs' keeper again. Rowan added a big insurance goal with just 31 seconds left in the stanza, putting in a distance shot from the right wing.
- Swarthmore was limited to two shots in the final period and both were turned aside by the goalkeeper.
