No. 19 Women’s Soccer Earns Third-Straight Centennial Win, Shuts Out Diplomats

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 19 Swarthmore College women's soccer team shut out Franklin & Marshall College, 1-0, in a battle between two of the three unbeaten teams in the Centennial Conference on Saturday.

Ava Gizzie remained scorching hot, scoring their fifth goal in the past four games. The junior has scored a goal in four-straight contests, and leads the Garnet in goals this season.

Swarthmore's defense teamed up for its sixth shutout of the season behind a four-save effort from Dahlia Bedward. Eloise Franz and Aminah Evans both logged a full 90-minutes to pace another stellar defensive showcase. The Garnet outshot their opponent 17-12, while allowing just four goals to reach the keeper.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Bedward backed up her two Centennial Defensive Player of the Week selections with back-to-back saves in the eighth minute. The senior made a tricky kick save to deny the first attempt, while quickly regrouping to stop a second-chance opportunity, just seconds later.

- The senior keeper stepped up and made another save in the 25th minute. The Diplomats fired a strike on goal from just outside the box after finding some open space in the defense. Bedward stepped up and easily corralled the attempt to hold the Diplomats scoreless.

-  Gizzie used their elite speed to beat a pair of Diplomat defenders in a foot race, resulting in the game's only score in the 29th minute. Charlotte Carleton headed the ball to Charlotte Sims at midfield, who led the junior forward with an excellent service downfield. Gizzie out-ran all defenders, caught up with the pass and delivered a well-placed strike to the upper corner.

- Stella Saad hit the crossbar in the 40th minute and then sent her second-chance shot to the left of the post. Swarthmore did an excellent job of maintaining pressure on the Diplomats defense, holding a 9-5 shot advantage in the opening half.

- Bedward faced her fourth and final test in the 55th minute, denying Franklin & Marshall with her fourth save. The Garnet defense allowed its opponent very few chances as they held strong for their sixth shutout of the season.
