No. 19 Women’s Soccer Captures Second-Straight in Pride Night Victory

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 19 Swarthmore College women's soccer team secured its second-straight conference victory with a 2-0 decision over Bryn Mawr College on Wednesday night.

The Garnet dominated the pace of play with a 19-3 shot advantage and a 13-0 edge on corners. Celia Kanellakos opened the scoring with a goal in the 34th minute, while Ava Gizzie ensured the victory with a tally in the 72nd minute.

Both Kanellakos and Gizzie notched their team-leading fourth goals of the season. Gizzie continued their hot stretch, tallying their fourth goal in the past three games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet capitalized on a free kick to open the scoring in the 34th minute. After Eloise Franz played the kick into traffic, the Owls attempted to block the ball out of harm's way, but instead found the foot of Kanellakos. The skilled sophomore settled the loose ball, moved laterally and then elevated a strike past the leaping keeper.

- Swarthmore dominated the stat sheet in the opening half, holding a 11-1 shot advantage. The Garnet fired three attempts on goal, while earning a commanding 10-0 advantage in corner attempts.

- Following intermission, the Garnet maintained their pressure and controlled play in the attacking zone. Lauren Lior forced the Bryn Mawr keeper into a challenging save in the 56th minute after playing a strike through a crowded box.

- Gizzie nearly snuck one inside the post after creating an incredible scoring opportunity for themselves. The crafty forward received a pass from Haley Lewinski, played the ball to themselves, beat a couple defenders, but fired a strike just outside of the post from a very challenging angle.

- The Garnet continued its steady attack on goal. Moments after Gizzie nearly buried one, Lior doinked a shot off the crossbar from 30-yards out in the 66th minute. Swarthmore was eventually rewarded for its persistence when Gizzie broke through with a goal in the 72nd minute. Liesel Blau chipped a loose ball towards the junior, who juggled the ball and then connected mid-air to direct it perfectly underneath the crossbar.
