Field Hockey Opens Centennial Play with Victory at Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team kicked off its Centennial Conference schedule with a 4-2 victory at Muhlenberg College on Wednesday. The Garnet captured their second-consecutive win, and their sixth-straight in their historical matchup against the Mules.

Penalty corners played a key role in Swarthmore's success, with three of its four goals coming off corner attempts. Sarah Cooper, Liza Semenenko, Magdelana Jordan and Annika Hoyer spread around the scoring as the Garnet put together their second-straight, four-goal performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither offense wasted time, as both teams scored within the opening five minutes. Muhlenberg struck first with a goal in the second minute, but Swarthmore answered quickly with an equalizer off a corner in the fifth. Avery Bloom sent the corner to the top of the box, where Cooper unleashed a rocket through traffic and into the cage.

- The Garnet took advantage of another penalty corner to give themselves a 2-1 edge. Bloom took the corner again for Swarthmore and played a pass to Zoe Larsen. The sophomore settled the pass and fed the ball to Semenenko, who powered a strike past the Mules goalie.

- Coming out of halftime, Swarthmore added to its advantage with another score off a penalty corner. Bloom took the corner again, and ended up firing a shot towards the cage, which was blocked away by the stick of a Mules defender. The shot deflected towards the opposite side of the cage, where it found an open Jordan, who capitalized on the good fortune. The Mules would get a goal back near the end of the stanza with a score in the 39th minute.

- Swarthmore added some breathing room with an insurance tally in the fourth quarter. Semenenko played an excellent ball to Hoyer to initiate a breakaway opportunity. The first-year then outran the only nearby defender before sneaking a strike to the near-post past the Muhlenberg goalie.
