No. 21 Women's Soccer Rallies In Second Half To Defeat No. 24 Johns Hopkins In Centennial Opener

BALTIMORE – The No. 21 Swarthmore College women's soccer team rallied for two second-half goals to defeat No. 24 Johns Hopkins University on the road, 2-1, in the Centennial Conference opener on Saturday.

The Blue Jays scored in the opening half for a 1-0 lead. Ava Gizzie netted the equalizer for the Garnet just over a minute into the second period. Stella Saad then capitalized on a Hopkins turnover to score the winning tally at the 68-minute mark.

Swarthmore escaped with the win despite a 22-5 advantage in shots for the Blue Jays. Dahlia Bedward made a career-high 11 saves in goal for the Garnet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- There was minimal action in the first half as the teams combined for eight shots, but just four were on frame. Hopkins did break the ice in the 33rd minute with a shot from 15 yards on the left side of the box and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

- Gizzie evened the score just 1:05 into the second half, beating the goalkeeper on the first shot of the stanza. They blocked a clearing attempt inside the six-yard box then turned and fired a shot into the net.

- The Blue Jays nearly regained the lead only three minutes later. A high shot was tipped by Bedward off the crossbar and back into play. Hopkins followed up on the attempt but put another try off the bar and the game remained level.

- Swarthmore took advantage of a miscue by the Blue Jays to score the go-ahead goal with 22 minutes to play. The Hopkins goalkeeper rolled the ball to a defender just outside the top of the box. The Blue Jay tried to play it across to a teammate but Saad intercepted the pass in the middle of the field. Saad blasted a kick from 20 yards past the out-of-position goalie to put the Garnet in front.

- Hopkins registered six shots as it tried to net the tying goal but Bedward stopped all four that were on target.
