Men’s Soccer Battles to Draw at Hopkins, Scores Two Unanswered Goals

BALTIMORE, MD. - The Swarthmore College men's soccer team battled back to a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet surrendered a pair of goals in the opening 10-minutes, but showed incredible perseverance as they battled back with a pair of unanswered scores.

Shlok Kaul and Toshiro Kenney fueled the comeback with goals in the 25th and 77th minutes, respectively. Kaul netted the opening goal after an incredible heads-up play from Len Yamabe on defense, while Kenney cashed in on the equalizer following a perfectly-placed pass from Kaden Cho. Kaul tallied a career-best three points on the afternoon with a goal and one assist.

Despite allowing a pair of early goals, Colin Crowe stepped up late in the game with a couple critical saves. The first-year ended the game with four saves as both teams registered six shots on goal. The Garnet were very efficient with their shot attempts, registering six of seven on net.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays seemed well in control after a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes of play. Johns Hopkins connected on its first two shot attempts of the game, netting scores in the fifth and seventh minutes, respectively.

- In the 21st minute, Kaul fired a rocket on goal from just outside the box. The keeper made a heads up play to block the attempt. Yamabe scooped the rebound, but was whistled offside to erase a golden opportunity for the Garnet.

- Yamabe stole a goal for the Garnet with a heads-up defensive play to force the Blue Jays into a costly error. The junior pressured Hopkins in front of its own goal after the keeper rolled the ball to a defender deep inside its own territory. Yamabe forced a pass back to the keeper, and then deflected a clear attempt to come away with a steal. Yamabe then centered the ball to Kaul, who maneuvered past the keeper before burying his shot over a helpless defender, making it 2-1.

- Joseph Eyiolowope fired a shot on net to open up the second half. The senior was able to fire off a quality attempt, despite being wrestled down to the ground. The Blue Jays had their share of scoring chances, but Swarthmore's defense held strong to keep its offense in the game.

- The Garnet stunned the Blue Jays, knotting the game in the 77th minute. Kaul and Cho touched the ball back and forth, before Cho centered a pass from 20 yards out. The first-year found the head of Kenney, who elevated an equalizer past the diving keeper.

- Crowe was forced to make a couple late saves to preserve a hard-fought draw. The first-year came through with a crucial stop after turning the ball over in front of the net with four minutes remaining. Hopkins came away with a steal and fired a shot directly at Crowe, who stood strong and deflected the attempt out of harm's way. Swarthmore's defense swarmed on the ensuing rebound, defusing the scoring threat to preserve a draw.
