SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's soccer team returned home after a five-game road swing but suffered a 1-0 loss to Franklin and Marshall College in a Centennial Conference contest on Saturday night.
The Diplomats scored the lone goal just over 10 minutes into the game and made it stand as the visitors withstood 23 Garnet shots. Swarthmore also had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet nearly broke the ice under six minutes into the first half when
Adrien Marcelli put a scoring attempt off the right post. F&M then took the lead four minutes later. The Diplomats played the ball across the field to the right side. A service from just inside midfield went into the box and was headed in just inside the right post.
-
Colin Crowe made several key saves for Swarthmore over the remainder of the half to keep the Garnet within one. The home team was able to put just two shots on frame during the period and trailed at the intermission.
- Swarthmore pressured for the equalizer throughout the second half, finishing with a 17-4 advantage in shots during the stanza.
Len Yamabe rocketed a shot in that was stopped by the goalkeeper in the 51
st minute. The rebound went to
Joseph Eyiolowope, whose second effort was cleared by a defender just short of the goal line.
-
Toshiro Kenney looked to sneak an attempt in under the bar in the 66
th minute but the Diplomats keeper was able to use his height and make a leaping grab. The Garnet seemed to finally score the tying goal in the 78
th minute when
Dante Cholmeley-Jones put back a rebound. However, the play was ruled offside and F&M maintained the 1-0 edge for the rest of the match.
