Field Hockey Cruises Past Kenyon in Home Shutout

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College field hockey team rolled past Kenyon College in a lopsided 4-0 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet set the tone early with three goals in the opening quarter.

Swarthmore spread around the goals in its highest scoring game of the season. Magdelana Jordan, Sarah Cooper and Erin Coyle added scores in the opening stanza, while Annika Hoyer piled on an insurance tally in the fourth.

Cassandra Conklin stopped the lone Kenyon shot attempt of the afternoon. The Garnet dominated possession, holding a 26-1 shot advantage and a 17-4 tilt in penalty corners.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet jumped out to a commanding three-goal advantage in the opening stanza. Jordan notched the first tally after elevating a shot below the crossbar in the fifth minute. Swarthmore then scored off a Cooper penalty corner in the eighth minute. The senior hammered home a Gabriella Vasquez pass at the side of the cage, taking a 2-0 lead.

- The Garnet continued to add on in a dominant first quarter.  Coyle scored in the 11th minute on a pass from Hayley Harris, who played the ball to Coyle at the opposite post on a breakaway opportunity. Swarthmore held an 8-1 shot advantage in the opening stanza, entering the first stoppage with a 3-0 lead.

- Defense dominated the second quarter, as neither offense generated many scoring opportunities. The Garnet attempted the lone shot of the quarter and held a 2-0 corner advantage. Swarthmore entered halftime with a comfortable 3-0 edge.

- Swarthmore fired off 12 shots in the third quarter, without conceding a single Kenyon shot attempt. The Garnet generated a plethora of opportunities with 10 corner attempts in the stanza, but were held in check by some quality goaltending from the Owls.

- Hoyer added on in the fourth quarter with a goal in the 46th minute. Following an Owls save, Hoyer navigated through traffic in front of the cage and beat the goalie for an unassisted score. The first-year currently ranks second on the team with three goals.
