EWING, N.J. – The Swarthmore College field hockey team suffered a tough 4-3 loss in double overtime at No. 20 The College of New Jersey on Wednesday evening.
The Garnet never trailed until the final score as the Lions battled back from three one-goal deficits. Swarthmore had the upper hand in shots (17-9) and penalty corners (8-5) but came away with the unfortunate result.
Liza Semenenko,
Hayley Harris, and
Sarah Cooper were the goal scorers for the Garnet.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Semenenko put Swarthmore in front just over five minutes into the contest when she followed up her own shot that was saved. TCNJ's lone shot of the opening quarter found the back of the cage in the 10
th minute, tying the score at one.
- In the second, the Garnet regained the advantage in the 23
rd minute.
Magdelana Jordan sent a pass into the scoring area from the right side and the ball deflected off a defender up into the air. Harris batted the ball up and over the charging goalkeeper and into the cage for a 2-1 lead. Jordan nearly made it a two-goal edge late in the period but a defensive save kept it a one-goal game at halftime.
- The teams endured a 45-minute lightning delay before beginning the second half. The Lions held Swarthmore to just one shot in the third quarter while netting the tying goal on a scrum following a penalty corner with 14 seconds remaining in the frame.
- The Garnet quickly went back ahead just 29 seconds into the fourth as Cooper converted a penalty stroke for a 3-2 lead. Swarthmore had several opportunities to increase the margin throughout the period but the TCNJ goalkeeper made four saves to keep their team in the game. The Lions then scored the equalizer with just 15 seconds left in regulation on their only shot of the stanza.
- The Garnet recorded the only two shots in the first overtime period but both were not on goal. TCNJ then produced the game-winner 41 seconds into the second extra session.
