Gizzie Scores Twice As Women's Soccer Ties TCNJ

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The No. 14 Swarthmore College women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw versus The College of New Jersey under the lights at Clothier Field Stadium on Saturday night.

Ava Gizzie netted both goals for the Garnet. The Lions took an early 1-0 lead less than eight minutes into the contest. Swarthmore fought back in the second half with Gizzie's tallies coming just four minutes apart to put the Garnet ahead. However, TCNJ scored the equalizer in the 68th minute.

Swarthmore was forced to settle for a tie despite controlling 54 percent of the possession and outshooting the Lions, 19-15. The Garnet had a 10-5 advantage in shots on frame and a dominant 12-1 edge in corner kicks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- TCNJ went in front on just its second shot of the evening, putting in a cross from the right side in the eighth minute. Swarthmore was shut out in the opening half despite a 9-6 advantage in shots. The Garnet nearly put in the tying goal off a corner kick in the 41st minute but a Lions' defender cleared the ball out just shy of the goal line.

- Swarthmore generated pressure at the start of the second half, getting off six shots within the first 10 minutes of the period. The final attempt in the stretch drew the Garnet level. Macie Mangini sent a long service down the field and Gizzie won a foot race to get to the ball. Gizzie dribbled around the late charging goalkeeper and did not miss the vacated net to tie the score at one in the 55th minute.

- Gizzie then gave Swarthmore the lead with the very next shot of the game. Celia Kanellakos dribbled to the top of the box on the left side and threaded a pass around her defender to Gizzie in the middle. Gizzie took a few steps to their right to gather the ball and fired a shot just under the bar to put the Garnet on top in the 59th minute.

- TCNJ came back to even the score at two in the 68th minute. The Lions were awarded a free kick in the attacking midfield and the service found its way into the back of the net. Gizzie had two prime chances to record the hat trick and put their team in front once more down the stretch but the TCNJ goalkeeper came up with two impressive saves to keep the game tied.
