HOBOKEN, N.J. – The No. 22 Swarthmore College field hockey team fell at No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology, 5-1, in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon.
The Ducks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half and did not look back. The Garnet won the shot count 16-11, including a 10-7 advantage in chances on goal, but were only able to muster one goal against the Stevens defense.
Amelia Landry recorded the lone goal for Swarthmore to up her season total to four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Ducks recorded all four shots in the opening quarter with two of them ending up in the back of the cage. Stevens scored its first tally off a penalty corner at the 12:34 mark before taking a 2-0 lead just 1:10 later.
- The Garnet got off to a strong start in the second period, registering four shots within the first five minutes. However, Swarthmore was foiled by the goalkeeper twice and the Ducks also came up with a defensive save to keep the visitors off the board.
- Stevens potted another goal just over nine minutes into the quarter to increase the margin to three. Late in the stanza, the Garnet were denied again by a defensive save off a penalty corner but Landry was able to put in the loose ball to get Swarthmore within two (3-1) just 24 seconds before halftime.
- The Ducks were able to hold the Garnet without a shot again in the third quarter while also scoring their fourth goal to restore a three-goal cushion (4-1). Swarthmore picked up its play in the fourth, totaling eight shots. However, the Stevens keeper stopped all four attempts on goal to keep the Garnet from getting back into the contest. The Ducks notched their final tally with just over a minute to play.
