Men's Soccer Comes Back To Defeat Redlands

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Len Yamabe scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute to secure a come-from-behind 2-1 win for the Swarthmore College men's soccer team against the University of Redlands on Sunday afternoon.

The game was scoreless entering the second half. The Bulldogs broke the ice in the 54th minute and took a 1-0 lead. The Garnet battled back with Jackson Haynes netting a goal for the second straight game, evening the score at one in the 68th minute. Joost Almekinders then set up Yamabe for the winner with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation.

Swarthmore won the shot battle, 18-13, and put 10 of its attempts on frame. The Garnet limited Redlands to a lone tally despite the Bulldogs' 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore controlled play over the first 20 minutes, recording six shots while conceding only two, but the teams remained tied. The Garnet had a flurry of three shots within a five minute span but the Redlands keeper came up with the stop each time. Garnet goalie Colin Crowe made his second save of the period with 32 seconds to go, keeping the contest scoreless at halftime.

- The Bulldogs got off to a strong start in the second half and it culminated with the first goal of the match in the 54th minute. Redlands perfectly executed a give-and-go at the top of the box and fired a shot into the back of the net.

- Swarthmore netted the equalizer in the 68th minute off a corner kick. The service found Adrien Marcelli on the far side of the box. His shot was stopped by the goalkeeper but Haynes was there to put in the rebound and bring the Garnet level.

- Late in the contest, a Swarthmore rush stalled out but Joost Almekinders stole the ball from the defense as it tried to clear. Almekinders then threaded a pass to Yamabe as he cut through the left side of the box and the Tokyo, Japan native beat the goalkeeper to the lower right corner to give the Garnet their first lead with 7:16 to play. The Bulldogs mustered just one shot down the stretch and it missed the target high.
