Coyle's Tally Gives Field Hockey Season-Opening Win As MacFarland Records First Career Victory

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The No. 22 Swarthmore College field hockey team opened the 2025 campaign with a 1-0 shutout at Wellesley College on Friday night.

The Garnet dominated the contest, outshooting the Blue, 25-2, on the evening. Neither of Wellesley's two shots were on cage. Erin Coyle recorded the lone Swarthmore tally for her first career goal while Cassandra Conklin picked up her 15th career shutout in net.

The victory marked the first career win for Acting Head Coach Aimee MacFarland.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore nearly took the lead in the sixth minute when Magdelana Jordan's shot clanged off the post. However, Coyle broke through for a goal just over two minutes later with an assist from Liza Semenenko. The Garnet tallied two more shots in the opening quarter but the lead remained at one.

- Swarthmore continued to control play in the second, registering five shots while conceding none. However, it remained a one-goal game at halftime. The Garnet had a flurry of shots just over two minutes into the third quarter but the Wellesley goalkeeper came up with three saves to keep their team within one. The Blue earned a pair of penalty corners in the period and notched their only two shots of the game but both went wide.

- Semenenko narrowly missed picking up her first career goal in the fourth as Wellesley came up with a defensive save. The Wellesley goalie stopped three more Swarthmore shots throughout the frame to keep the score tight but the Blue were unable to find the equalizer.
