No. 21 Women's Tennis Cruises Past Penn State Harrisburg In NCAA First Round For Program-Record Win

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 21 Swarthmore College women's tennis team made quick work of its NCAA First Round matchup against Penn State Harrisburg with a 4-0 shutout of the Nittany Lions on Friday afternoon. The Garnet advance to the second round versus the host Washington and Lee University.

The victory was the 17th of the year for Swarthmore, setting a new single-season program record. The Garnet surpassed the previous mark of 16 established by the 2005-06 squad.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore had an early edge to start the match as PSU could not field a team at third doubles. Kathleen Shiffer and Erin Li then dominated their opponents at the second spot, winning 6-0 to clinch a point for the Garnet. Nathalie Williams and Lola Diaz were ahead 4-1 in their bout at first doubles when play was halted.

- Swarthmore again received a free point at the start of singles competition as the Nittany Lions did not have a player for the sixth flight. Lisa Messier then rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 success at fifth singles to give the Garnet a 3-0 advantage and bring them within one point of victory.

- Strickler conceded just one game in her opening set at the fourth spot, 6-1, before whitewashing her foe in the second frame, 6-0, to secure advancement for Swarthmore. Williams, Li, and Shiffer all won their respective first sets and were ahead in their second stanza at first, second, and third singles when the match was clinched.
