Women’s Tennis Falls in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 21 Swarthmore College women's tennis team saw its season come to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, falling in a tightly contested 4-3 match to No. 42 Washington and Lee University on Saturday afternoon.

After falling behind 3-0, the Garnet mounted an impressive comeback to tie the match, but ultimately came up short in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles. Kathleen Shiffer, Lola Diaz, and Lisa Messier each earned hard-fought singles victories, showcasing extraordinary resilience and fight from the squad.

The Garnet capped off a historic season with a program-record 17 wins, and their first NCAA second round appearance since 2007. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet dropped two of their three doubles matches to concede a crucial doubles point. Erin Li/ Shiffer earned the lone victory for the Garnet, prevailing in a 7-5 tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles.

- Ella Strickler/ Riya Rao suffered a rare doubles defeat with a 7-5 loss at No. 3. The pairing had won 16-straight matches before today's defeat.

- The Generals took early control of the match with singles victories at the No. 5 and No. 2 positions. Diaz kept the Garnet's hopes alive with a resilient three-set victory at No. 4 singles. After winning the first set 6-2, she dropped the second set 6-1, but bounced back to secure the win with a 6-2 decision in the final set.

- With Swarthmore's season on the line, Shiffer delivered her second win of the day with a gritty performance at No. 3 singles. After dropping the first set 6-3, she rallied to take the next two sets 6-2 and 6-3, keeping the Garnet's hopes alive.

- Lisa Messier showcased her toughness with a high-leverage win at No. 6 singles. After dropping the opening set 6-2, Messier edged out her challenger with a 6-4 win in set two. She then went on to secure the final set with a narrow 7-5 decision, tying the overall match score at 3-3. 

- Nathalie Williams went toe-to-toe with the 17th best player in the nation at No. 1 singles. The pair traded 6-4 victories in the opening two sets, before the Generals top player clinched victory with a 7-6 [7-3] tiebreaker in the final set.
