COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The No. 18 Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team returned to action on Wednesday night after an 11-day hiatus and used an 8-0 run to take over and defeat Ursinus College, 17-7, in a Centennial Conference game.
The teams were even at two in the opening quarter before the Garnet scored eight unanswered to take control. Swarthmore asserted its will to begin the second half, netting four in a row and seven of the first eight tallies to thwart any attempt of a comeback by the Bears.
Clay Almgren led the way with eight points on five goals and three assists. The five goals tied his career high.
Michael Hardiman produced three goals and two helpers while
Danny Lowe contributed two goals and one assist.
Rex Mabbs tallied a pair of goals.
Matthew Martinez went 12-for-16 at the face-off dot and
Drew Tyson made 14 saves in the cage for his fourth straight double-digit performance.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ursinus opened the scoring less than a minute into the contest but the Garnet responded with back-to-back goals for a 2-1 lead. The Bears netted the equalizer at the 6:49 mark of the first.

Ryder Maston beat the goalkeeper with 59 seconds to go in the opening quarter, setting off an 8-0 Swarthmore surge. Almgren and Hardiman both scored twice during the run and the Garnet held a 10-2 advantage with 1:09 left before halftime. Ursinus ended its scoring drought just before the intermission and trailed 10-3.
- Both teams went scoreless for over eight minutes to begin the second half, but the Garnet broke the ice when
Owen George found the back of the net with 6:31 remaining. Swarthmore posted three more tallies to up the margin to 11 (14-3) with 4:28 on the clock. The Bears had the final goal of the period before both teams scored three times in the fourth quarter.
