Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The No. 31 Swarthmore College women's tennis team suffered a close 4-3 loss at No. 9 Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday.
The Tartans won two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. The Garnet pulled even to begin singles play before CMU won the next two bouts to reclaim the lead. Swarthmore got within one at 3-2 but the Tartans earned a split in the final two matches to take the victory.
Ella Strickler stood out for the Garnet, going 2-0 on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tartans captured a 6-4 win versus
Nathalie Williams and
Lola Diaz at first doubles to begin play. CMU also came out on top of a 6-4 decision at second doubles, knocking off
Kathleen Shiffer and
Erin Li.
Riya Rao and Strickler kept their win streak alive with a 7-5 triumph at the third spot. Rao and Strickler have won seven consecutive matches as a pair.

Lisa Messier quickly got Swarthmore level with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 success at sixth singles. However, the Tartans recorded wins at first and third singles to go ahead 3-1. Li dropped a 0-6, 4-6 score at the top spot and Diaz fell 3-6, 1-6 at the third position.
- Strickler was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at the fifth spot to secure her seventh consecutive triumph and get the Garnet within one (3-2). CMU then clinched the victory with a win at fourth singles as Shiffer came up short 4-6, 6-4, 2-6. Williams battled to a three-set win, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at second singles for her sixth win in a row to close the match.
