FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 16 Swarthmore College men's tennis team topped No. 17 University of Mary Washington on the road, 6-1, on Saturday.
The Garnet swept doubles play before taking five of the six singles bouts.
Michael Melnikov and
Kai Chen both earned a pair of victories to lead Swarthmore.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Chen teamed up with
Andres Fente for a 6-2 win at second doubles to get the match underway. The pair of
Utham Koduri and Melnikov pulled out a tight tiebreak at the first position, 7-6 (10-8), to put the Garnet ahead 1-0.
Max Lindstrom and
Winston Zhang also battled to a tiebreak victory at third doubles, 7-6 (7-3), to increase their win streak to five.

Lalith Suresh earned the first singles triumph of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-2 decision at the fourth spot, his fifth consecutive victory. The Eagles picked up their lone win of the match with a 6-1, 6-2 success against Lindstrom at second singles.

Rishi Verma gave the Garnet a 3-1 advantage with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the third flight.
Aamish Pal then clinched the match for the visitors with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at sixth singles. At fifth singles, Chen won a close opening set, 7-6, before finishing off the sweep with a 6-4 decision. Melnikov was the only player to go all three sets but came away with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-0 win at the top spot.
