Women’s Tennis Defeats Mary Washington in Regular Season Finale

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The No. 20 Swarthmore College women's tennis team put a bow on its regular season with a 4-3 victory over the University of Mary Washington on Sunday.

After conceding the doubles point, Swarthmore had the edge in singles action with victories from Ella Strickler, Nathalie Williams, Lisa Messier and Madeline Posner, who clinched the match with a win at No. 6 singles. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES

- Riya Rao/ Strickler delivered the team's first win of the day with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles. The duo extended their winning streak to 13 matches after losing their first two of the season, finishing the regular season with a 13-2 record - the best on the team in doubles play.

- Kathleen Shiffer/ Erin Li dropped a hard-fought match at No. 1 doubles, falling 7-5. Mary Washington secured the doubles point with a narrow 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles, where the Eagles edged out Williams/ Messier by taking the tiebreaker 7-1.


SINGLES
- Strickler earned her second win of the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles. The sophomore has now won nine of her last ten matches, bringing her team-leading total to 15 wins.

- Messier gave the Garnet the lead with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles. She improved to 12-4 on the season and has won five straight matches.

- At No. 2 singles, Williams bounced back with a 6-2, 6-4 victory. The senior has won 12 straight matches dating back to early March and is currently ranked 20th in the nation.

- Posner clinched the win for the Garnet with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. The first-year closed out the regular season with five straight wins.

- Li came up short in a hard-fought match at No. 1 singles, falling 6-4, 6-3. Her doubles partner, Shiffer, also suffered a tough loss in three sets. The junior won the first 6-2, dropping the second 6-3, and falling 10-6 in the match tiebreak.

The Garnet (14-4) host the winner of the Washington College vs. Dickinson College match in the Centennial Conference Semifinals on Friday.
