HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team swept the season series against rival Haverford College with an 18-6 road victory over the Fords on Friday.
The Garnet outscored Haverford, 41-12, over their two contests this week. It was the first time that Swarthmore won both games versus the Fords since 2022.
The Garnet jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening frame but the home team erased the deficit by the end of the second inning. Swarthmore then posted six runs in the fourth to take over for good.
Aidan Sullivan went 4-for-6 and was just a home run short of the cycle, recording a double, a triple, one RBI, three runs, and a stolen base.
Brad Johnston and
Matthew Silvestre tallied three hits apiece with Johnston blasting a pair of home runs and driving in five. Johnston was a thorn in the side of Haverford this week, totaling three long balls and 10 RBI over the two games.
Benjamin Buchman and
Leor Kedar also hit one out of the park with Buchman finishing with four RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kedar began the game with a solo shot over the left-field fence for a quick 1-0 lead. Sullivan tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch. Silvestre and Buchman reached before Johnston crushed his first homer of the day with two outs to up the Garnet advantage to five.
- The Fords got one back in the bottom of the first via a two-out RBI single. Haverford then put up a four-spot in the second to even the score at five. Two runs came across on a pair of groundouts and two more on a double.
- Swarthmore regained the edge in the fourth, producing six runs in the frame.
Zac Kahn hit a lead-off single and Johnston followed with his second jack of the afternoon for a 7-5 lead.
Andrew Firko added a two-run single later in the stanza, and Sullivan doubled in a run before scoring on a groundout.
- After battling through tough first and second innings,
Noah Potholm settled in and allowed just three baserunners over his final 4.1 frames to earn his sixth win.
David Herrin,
Ian Born, and
Steven Jungers then limited the Fords to one run over the last 2.2 innings.
- The Garnet finished the game with seven runs across the closing two stanzas. Buchman put an exclamation point on the scoring with a three-run homer in the ninth.
