SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team posted 23 runs for the second time in five days and rolled to a 23-6 victory in seven innings versus Haverford College on Tuesday.
The Garnet mashed three homers and 21 hits on the afternoon. They scored in all six offensive innings and recorded a crooked number in five frames. With the win, Swarthmore clinched a top-two finish in the Centennial standings and at least one home game in next week's conference tournament.
Matthew Silvestre was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run, five RBI, and two runs.
Leor Kedar and
Max Roffwarg each tallied three hits with Kedar finishing just a double short of the cycle.
Brad Johnston crushed a grand slam and totaled five RBI and four runs. All nine Garnet starters registered a hit in the rout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore got out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Roffwarg and Silvestre each hit an RBI single and
Aidan Sullivan executed a delayed steal of home. After the Fords got on the board in the second, the Garnet scored six times in the bottom of the frame to make it 9-1. Kedar homered just inside the left field pole for his third long-ball of the season. Silvestre later blasted his second home run in as many games, a three-run shot, to tie for the team lead with five.
Max Beadling singled in a run and Johnston came home on a wild pitch.
- Haverford scored on a double in the third but Swarthmore answered with another six-spot. Kedar scored on an error,
Zac Kahn drew a bases-loaded walk, and Johnston bashed a grand slam into the trees in dead center. In the fourth, the Fords pushed across one run and the Garnet scored twice.
Benjamin Buchman produced a sacrifice fly and Silvestre singled in another run.
- Both teams tallied a run in the fifth before Haverford finished its scoring with a two-run homer in the sixth. Swarthmore concluded its barrage with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Johnston,
Nathaniel Kittredge, and Sullivan all drove in a run with a single, Johnston scored on a groundout, and
Noam AuYeung forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk.
