SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The No. 27 Swarthmore College women's tennis team bounced back with a 4-3 victory over No. 30 Christopher Newport University at the Mullan Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Garnet claimed the doubles point by taking two of the three matches.
Erin Li and
Nathalie Williams recorded back-to-back wins to begin singles play and give Swarthmore a 3-0 lead. After the Captains cut it to 3-1,
Lisa Messier registered the clinching point at sixth singles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Williams teamed with
Lola Diaz at first doubles and the pair pulled out a 7-6 tiebreak win. CNU was the winner at second doubles, coming out on top of another 7-6 tiebreak versus
Kathleen Shiffer and Li.
Riya Rao and
Ella Strickler continued their strong play at third doubles as the duo earned their eighth consecutive victory, 6-4.
- Li started singles with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at the second flight. Williams gave the Garnet a three-point lead with a 6-4, 6-2 success at the top spot, her seventh win in a row. The senior came back from a 2-0 deficit in the opening set. The Captains earned their first win in singles competition with a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Diaz at the third position.
- Messier secured the victory for Swarthmore with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at sixth singles. CNU grabbed the last two points with third-set tiebreak victories over Shiffer at fourth singles, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0, and Strickler at fifth singles, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0. Strickler had her seven-match win streak snapped with the defeat.
