Softball Suffers Two Losses To Begin Florida Trip

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Swarthmore College softball team had a tough start to its stay at The Spring Games, falling 10-7 versus Carroll University and 9-2 against No. 14 Belhaven University on Saturday.
 
The Pioneers broke a 7-7 tie in the fifth inning and made it stand up while the Blazers scored nine unanswered runs across the final five frames to defeat the Garnet.
 
Emily Bertrand, Olivia McClammy, and Grace Taylor all tallied three hits on the day for Swarthmore. McClammy recorded two RBI, two walks, and three runs. Iris Barone notched a pair of hits, one RBI, and one run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams scored a run in the opening inning. McClammy scampered home on a two-out wild pitch before Carroll tied it up on an RBI fielder's choice.
 
- The Garnet regained the lead in the second. The first three hitters reached to load the bases before a passed ball moved everyone up a base with Lia Fong coming home for a 2-1 Swarthmore edge. Barone later hit a sacrifice fly to up the advantage to two (3-1).
 
- The Pioneers got one back in the bottom of the second when they scored on an error. Carroll then went off for five runs in the third to go ahead 7-3. The Pioneers used three hits, two walks, and an error to post the big inning.
 
- The Garnet rallied in the fifth with four runs to tie the score. The first five batters found their way on base, including McClammy with a two-run single and Bertrand with an RBI base hit. Jordan Jackson's sac fly then brought home McClammy to even it up at seven.
 
- Carroll took the upper hand for good with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Pioneers got it going with a lead-off triple before scoring on an error and adding two more on a base hit through the left side.
 
- Swarthmore was able to load the bases in the sixth but a strikeout quashed the threat. The Garnet brought the tying run to the plate again in the seventh but another strikeout ended the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a 1-2-3 inning on defense to start the game, Swarthmore scored twice in its half of the first to take an early lead. Jackson, McClammy, and Bertrand all singled with one out and the bases were loaded for Avery McClure. McClure drew a walk to force in a run before McClammy came home on a passed ball.
 
- The Blazers went down in order again in the second but their offense woke up in the third for three runs. Belhaven smacked a two-run triple and added an RBI single to take a 3-2 edge. The Blazers added one run apiece in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings via a passed ball, a double, and an error to increase their lead to four (6-2).
 
- Belhaven scored its final three runs in the seventh with two RBI doubles and a run-scoring base hit. The Garnet's best chance to get back in the game came in the fifth but they stranded the bases full.
