Softball Takes Down No. 18 Calvin in Monday Split

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Swarthmore College softball team earned a split against Husson University and No. 18 Calvin University on Monday. The Garnet fell to Husson, 4-1, but bounced back with a 2-1 victory over nationally-ranked Calvin in the finale.

Lilly Goldberg was excellent in a complete-game victory over the Knights. The first-year allowed just one first-inning run as she shut the door on Calvin's offense. Goldberg struck out four batters, while allowing four hits and no walks.

Avery McClure delivered with a big, go-ahead single to secure Swarthmore its victory. With two-outs in the sixth inning, the junior brought home a pair of runs with a knock through the right side.

SWARTHMORE 1, HUSSON 4
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Husson manufactured a run in the first inning. Their speedy leadoff hitter reached base on a bunt, stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. She then came home to score on a single through the right side. Lane Barron avoided further damage in the frame with a strikeout followed by an inning-ending double play, 1-0.

- The Eagles tacked on another run in the second with back-to-back, one-out doubles. However, Barron stranded a runner in scoring position with a strikeout and a pop up to escape the inning, 2-0.

- In the fourth inning, Oliva McClammy advanced into scoring position after singling up the middle and stealing second base. However, the Garnet were unable to come away with a two-out knock.

- Husson doubled its lead with two runs in the fifth inning. The Garnet got one back in the sixth with singles from Iris Barone and McClammy. Barone singled up the middle with one out and stole second, while McClammy delivered a two-out knock to left, 4-1.

- Lia Fong tossed a 1-2-3 sixth inning to keep the Garnet in contention. Rae Barron reached base with a two-out single in the seventh, but Swarthmore was unable to muster enough offense.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Calvin began the scoring with a first-inning run. After opening the game with a double, the Knights touched home on a ground out to the shortstop, 1-0.

- Goldberg settled in with an easy second inning as she retired the Knights in order. Emily Bertrand reached on a single to lead off the bottom half, but was left stranded at first base. Goldberg then blanked Calvin with another 1-2-3 frame in the third.

- In the fourth, McClure threatened with a two-out double down the left-field line, but was left standing at second to end the inning. Goldberg continued to keep Swarthmore in the game with zeros in the fifth and sixth innings.

- Swarthmore put a pair in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth. Barone was hit by a pitch to open the frame, then Bertrand doubled to left to put the go-ahead run on second base. In need of a two-out hit, McClure played hero with a go-ahead single through the right side to plate both runs, 2-1.

- Goldberg shut the door in the seventh inning with another 1-2-3 frame. The first-year was spectacular in her first complete game.
