No. 13 Men’s Lacrosse Blows Past Muhlenberg, Improves to 1-1 in Centennial

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 13 Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team returned to conference action with a 16-6 victory over Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night. The Garnet improved to 1-1 in the Centennial Conference as they prepare for No. 18 Dickinson College on Saturday.

The Garnet overcame the Mules with a dominant first and third quarter. Swarthmore outscored Muhlenberg 11-2 in those two periods combined, despite being shutout in the second quarter.

Clay Almgren and Michael Hardiman spearheaded the offense with two hat tricks. Almgren recorded five points, including three goals and two assists, while Hardiman scored four goals. Hardiman extended his lead in the conference for most goals scored, and Almgren remained the Centennial points leader.

Drew Tyson made 13 saves, earning a .684 save percentage. The junior also contributed offensively, scoring his first collegiate goal with a rocket from the opposite end of the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore jumped out to a dominant start, scoring five consecutive goals to open the game. Owen Hoffman netted the first goal with an assist from Almgren, who then scored three straight goals for the Garnet. Tyson energized his teammates and the crowd with his first collegiate goal, firing a shot from across the field into an empty net for a rare goalie goal. The Mules ended their scoring drought with a lone goal in the quarter, but Rex Mabbs responded with Swarthmore's sixth score, adding one more with 37 seconds left to make it 6-1.

- The Mules responded to Swarthmore's offense with a scoreless second quarter, narrowing their deficit to three with goals at 10:55 and 42 seconds remaining. Despite being outshot 15-4 in the period, the Garnet held on to a 6-3 lead heading into halftime.

- The Garnet ended a 25-minute scoring drought with the first goal of the third quarter. Hardiman got Swarthmore back on the board at the 9:36 mark. Hoffman added another with a man-up goal for his second of the evening, followed by scores from Ronan Butler and Danny Lowe less than a minute apart. Ryder Maston capped a five-goal run for the Garnet before Muhlenberg responded with two goals, bringing the score to 11-4 at the end of the quarter.

- Hardiman scored back-to-back goals to open the fourth quarter, and complete his hat trick. Muhlenberg eventually ended the scoring lull with a goal at 5:24, before Matthew Martinez notched his first goal of the season. Maston and Hardiman each added insurance tallies before the final horn to secure a double-digit victory for the Garnet.
