MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Swarthmore College baseball team could not overcome two big innings by host Montclair State University, falling 11-4 to the Red Hawks in the final game of the Montclair State Round Robin on Sunday evening.
The Garnet jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third but the Red Hawks countered with one run in the third then five in the fourth to go in front 6-4. MSU pulled away with another five-run frame in the sixth. Swarthmore was held to six hits in the contest.
Six different players tallied a hit for the Garnet.
Easton Tolson drove in a pair of runs while
Max Roffwarg and
Zac Kahn each totaled one RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore had an early opportunity to score in the first, loading the bases with one out. However, an inning-ending double play snuffed out the chance. The Garnet were able to convert in the third to the tune of four runs.
Nathaniel Kittredge and
Leor Kedar got it started with back-to-back singles. Kittredge scored on a fielder's choice to get Swarthmore on the board.
Matthew Silvestre walked to load the bases before Kahn drew another free pass to force in a run. Tolson then doubled down the line in left to bring home a pair and give the Garnet a 4-0 advantage.
- The Red Hawks broke through with an RBI single in the bottom of the third before going off for five runs in the fourth. MSU smacked a two-run triple, recorded an RBI bunt single, and hit a two-run base knock to go ahead 6-4.
- The home team increased its lead with another five-run inning in the sixth. The Red Hawks totaled three hits, drew a trio of walks, stole four bases, and benefitted from an error and a wild pitch. Two of the five runs were unearned.
- After Swarthmore's big inning, the Garnet offense faltered the rest of the way, mustering just three baserunners over the last six frames.
