Women’s Lacrosse Drops Conference Opener to No. 3 Diplomats

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team lost its Centennial Conference opener to No. 3 Franklin & Marshall College, 16-2, on Wednesday.

Claire Long and Elizabeth Zack each scored for Swarthmore, with Long finding the back of the net in the final seconds of the opening quarter and Zack adding her goal in the third.

Brooke Carrier played all 60 minutes in goal, making seven saves against a strong Diplomat offense. Lillian Lewis and Mia Holland both grabbed three ground balls to lead the Garnet. Holland also added a team-high three caused turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Diplomats scored the first four goals in the opening quarter. After two quick goals in the first four minutes, the Garnet managed to slow down Franklin & Marshall's attack until the visitors added two more goals later in the period. Before the first intermission, Long put the Garnet on the board with an unassisted goal at the 17-second mark.

- Franklin & Marshall outscored the Garnet with three-unanswered scores in the second. The Garnet had four shots on goal in the quarter, but were denied on all four attempts. The Diplomats went into halftime with a 7-1 advantage.

- The Diplomats opened the third quarter with their fourth and fifth unanswered scores. Zack then broke Swarthmore's drought with the team's second tally at the 9:49 mark. Franklin & Marshall ended up piecing together five-straight scores to end a lopsided stanza, 14-2.

- The Diplomats shut out the Garnet in the fourth quarter. The nationally-ranked powerhouse added two more goals in the period, while stopping all two of Swarthmore's shots on goal.
