Baseball Smashes Three Homers, Produces Strong Pitching To Knock Off No. 17 Misericordia

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team rode two big innings to a 13-3 upset of the defending national champion, No. 17 Misericordia University, at Clothier Field on Tuesday afternoon. It was the Garnet's second victory against a nationally-ranked squad this season.

Swarthmore bashed three homers on the day. The Garnet scored four times in the second to take an early 4-0 lead. The Cougars cut the deficit to two (5-3) before Swarthmore pulled away with five more runs in the sixth. The Garnet tacked on three additional runs over their final two at-bats.

Max Roffwarg went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs and a stolen base. Aidan Sullivan and Benjamin Buchman each tallied two hits and two runs. Brad Johnston, Nathaniel Kittredge, and Zac Kahn all hit a long ball and drove in three runs. Easton Tolson totaled two RBI. Aidan Tinker tossed 5.0 innings of two-run ball, one of which was unearned, to pick up his first collegiate victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Misericordia threatened early, putting two runners in scoring position in the opening inning. However, Tinker got a fly-out to end the frame. The Cougars loaded the bases in the second but Tinker again got out of the jam with a groundout.

- Swarthmore got the offense going with four runs in the second. The Garnet loaded the bases with the first three batters before a passed ball brought the first run home. Kahn then blasted his first career homer with a three-run shot to center to put Swarthmore up four.

- Misericordia got two runs back in the fifth on consecutive RBI singles. Sullivan scored on Kittredge's groundout in the bottom of the inning to make the score 5-2 Garnet. The Cougars recorded an RBI double in the sixth to close the gap to two (5-3) once again.

- Swarthmore came through with a crooked number in the bottom of the sixth to increase the advantage to seven (10-3). Tolson brought home Roffwarg with a sacrifice fly and the bases were empty with two outs. Leor Kedar followed with a single and he scored on an error after Sullivan's double. Matthew Silvestre walked to put two runners on for Johnston, who crushed a pitch to left field for his first home run of the campaign.

- Tolson added another RBI to his total with a sacrifice in the seventh to make the score 11-3. Kittredge went yard in the eighth with his first career homer to account for the Garnet's final two runs of the contest. Behind Tinker, Michelangelo Duva, Jeremy Jensen, and Michael Lewis combined for four innings of one-run ball in relief.
