SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College baseball team dropped a back-and-forth contest to DeSales University, 7-6, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs homered in the first inning and took a 3-0 lead. After DeSales upped the advantage to four, the Garnet rallied with three successive two-run frames to go in front, 6-4. However, another three-run shot by the Bulldogs in the sixth gave them a one-run edge that they did not relinquish.
Matthew Silvestre and
Max Roffwarg both went 2-for-4 with a walk at the plate for Swarthmore. Silvestre knocked in a run while Roffwarg scored once and added a stolen base. Five other Garnet players recorded a hit with
Easton Tolson,
Wilson Henze, and
Aidan Sullivan all driving in one run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first two DeSales batters of the game reached on singles before the Bulldogs crushed a two-out homer for an early three-run lead. The visitors added another two-out run in the third with a single and went up 4-0.
- The Garnet offense got going in the bottom of the third. Tolson came home on an error and Silvestre doubled with two away to score Henze and get Swarthmore within two (4-2). In the fourth, the first three hitters reached to load the bases. After a fielder's choice,
Zac Kahn scored on a groundout to make it a one-run game. A hit by pitch stacked the bases again for Sullivan, who drew a walk to tie the score.
- The Garnet continued their attack in the fifth. Roffwarg touched the plate on an error to give Swarthmore a 5-4 lead. Tolson singled in Kahn with two outs to put the Garnet ahead by two (6-4).
- DeSales answered in the sixth inning with more two-out runs. The Bulldogs bashed their second three-run home run of the day to flip the script and jump in front 7-6. Swarthmore had the tying run in scoring position in the sixth and eighth innings but was unable to bring home the equalizer.
