ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 26 Swarthmore College women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 20 Kenyon College on Wednesday night.
The Owls won the doubles point then proceeded to take four of the six singles bouts.
Ella Strickler was the highlight for the Garnet as she went 2-0 on the evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kenyon claimed two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Nathalie Williams and
Lola Diaz fell in a close bout at first doubles, 4-6. The Owls also defeated Swarthmore's second doubles team of
Erin Li and
Kathleen Shiffer, 6-0. The Garnet recorded their lone victory at the third spot, where
Riya Rao and Strickler did not drop a game in a 6-0 triumph.
- Williams bounced back in singles action and topped her opponent at the first position, 6-0, 6-4.
Erin Li lost a close opening set at second singles, 5-7, before falling in the second set, 2-6.
- Diaz was unable to find a rhythm at third singles, bowing out 2-6, 2-6. Shiffer also fell in straight sets at the fourth spot, 3-6, 4-6.
- Strickler played a strong match at the fifth flight, coming out on top 6-2, 6-0.
Lisa Messier was entrenched in a tight battle at sixth singles, winning the opener 7-5 before dropping the second set 2-6. The bout was even at five in the decisive frame when the match went to a tiebreak due to court time restrictions. Messier was unable to pull out the win, suffering a 1-5 loss.
