No. 11 Men’s Lacrosse Suffers Overtime Loss at York

YORK, Pa. - The No. 11 Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season in an overtime showdown at York College, 11-10, on Wednesday night. 

The Garnet led 6-0 after the first quarter, but were outscored 11-5 to close the game. The Spartans scored the game-winning goal with two seconds remaining in overtime. 

Rex Mabbs collected a hat trick to lead all Garnet scorers. Clay Almgren, Michael Hardiman and Emmett Harris added a pair of goals, while Gabe Malcolm tallied one score. Almgren also added to his conference lead in assists with three. 

Drew Tyson set a new career high with 20 saves after matching his previous best of 18 against Kenyon College. The junior allowed ten goals for a .643 saves percentage. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore controlled the game early with a 6-0 advantage after the opening 15 minutes. Harris opened the scoring at the 8:26 mark, while Hardiman followed with another score less than a minute later. Harris struck again at the 6:28 mark with an assist from Almgren. Mabbs, Hardiman and Almgren then ended the stanza with goals in the remaining five minutes. Tyson made all three saves in the quarter as the Garnet held a 17-5 shot advantage to open play. 

- York began to figure things out in the second quarter. The Spartans tallied their first goal with 14:34 left in the second, before Mabbs quickly countered with his second score of the game. However, York rallied for four-unanswered scores to close out the stanza. The home team flipped the script with a 15-8 shot advantage in the quarter. The Garnet carried a two-goal advantage into halftime, 7-5.

- Malcolm notched the first goal out of intermission to give Swarthmore a three-goal lead. York then scored at the 8:52 mark, before Mabbs completed his hat trick with a goal at 5:04. The Spartans scored two more times in the quarter to shrink their deficit to one goal. York outshot Swarthmore 11-3 in the stanza. 

- After capturing momentum, York finally connected on the equalizer with 6:46 remaining in the fourth quarter. Almgren battled back with a go-ahead score at the 4:43 mark, but the Garnet were unable to hold off the Spartans, who tied the game with 2:31 left. Tyson and Ryan Pretzer combined for 10 saves in the quarter with the Spartans holding a 16-5 shot advantage.

- The Garnet survived an onslaught of York offensive attacks in the overtime period. However, the Spartans took advantage of a Swarthmore failed clear attempt, as they scooped up a ground ball and scored with two seconds remaining.
