WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Swarthmore College softball team swept this morning's action with victories over Ohio Northern University, 10-2, and Western New England University, 7-0. The Garnet improved their record to 5-5 on the season.
Lia Fong recorded her first collegiate win with six strong innings in the opener. The first-year allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out four batters in an efficient outing. Olivia McClammy, Emily Bertrand and Jordan Jackson provided all the necessary offense with a combined nine RBI. McClammy led the trio with three hits, two runs and four RBI.
Lilly Goldberg set the tone in the second game with another outstanding pitching performance. The first-year tossed her second-straight complete game, allowing zero runs with a season-high eight strikeouts. Goldberg has allowed just one run in her previous 14 innings of work.Â
SWARTHMORE 10, OHIO NORTHERN 2 (6 INNINGS)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Iris Barone got the Garnet started with a bunt single and a stolen base to lead off the first. McClammy then brought the speedster home with a knock up the middle for the game's opening run. Fong then shutdown the Polar Bears with a 1-2-3 opening frame.Â
- Swarthmore tacked on a pair of runs in the second inning. After opening the stanza with consecutive strikeouts, Elisabeth O'Connor singled to center and then stole second to prolong the inning. Barone then reached on a single to third base, before both runners came home to score on a Jackson single to right field. Ohio Northern got one run back in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff homer, 3-1. Â
- Fong helped herself in the third inning after her and McClure reached on back-to-back singles. McClure came home to score on Fong's basehit after a fielding error by the centerfielder, 4-1.
- The Polar Bears answered with a run in the third inning, but could not silence Swarthmore's hot bats. The Garnet rallied for three runs in the fourth to build a five-run cushion. McClammy drove in two runs with a double, while Bertrand put the ball in play on a groundout to drive home the senior slugger, 7-2.Â
- The Garnet put the game away with three more runs in the sixth. McClammy drove in her fourth run on a single to center, while Bertrand plated the team's final two scores with a single to the outfield, 10-2.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a pair of scoreless innings from Goldberg, the Garnet got on the board with three runs in the second inning. O'Connor grounded out to plate the first run, while Catherine Heflin scored on an error and Jackson singled home a third run, 3-0. Â
- Heflin added on another score with an RBI single in the third inning. Meanwhile, Goldberg continued to cruise through the Golden Bears lineup with a scoreless third and fourth inning, 4-0.
- Swarthmore's bats went back to work with two runs in the fifth inning. Kate Borza brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, while Serafino Tinio singled up the middle to add another in the frame. The Garnet tacked on one final insurance tally in the seventh with McClammy scoring off an error, 7-0.Â
