Softball Wraps Up Stay at The Spring Games With Two-Game Split

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Swarthmore College softball team concluded its Spring Break trip to Florida with a pair of games on Thursday. The Garnet blanked Albertus Magnus College, 6-0, before falling to Nichols College, 4-3, in the nightcap. Swarthmore finished with an even 4-4 record over its week in the Sunshine State.

Emily Bertrand went 4-for-7 on the day to lead the Garnet offense. The senior drove in one run. Iris Barone, Jordan Jackson, and Avery McClure tallied three hits apiece. Barone registered a double and two RBI, Jackson knocked in one and scored twice, and McClure added a triple and two runs. Olivia McClammy totaled two RBI to close to within one of the program's all-time record. Lane Barron hurled six shutout innings for the win versus Albertus Magnus.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore wasted no time at the start, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Jackson and McClure produced back-to-back singles with one out then both scored on McClammy's double. After a single by Bertrand put runners on the corners, McClammy scurried home on a delayed double steal to give the Garnet a three-run advantage.

- The three-run first was all Barron needed, as she was dominant in the pitching circle. The junior tossed six scoreless innings, four of which were perfect. Barron allowed just one hit, a lead-off single in the third, and only one Falcon reached second base.

- Iris Barone singled in a run in the fourth to up the margin to four. In the sixth, Jackson drove in a run with a base hit and later scored on an error to give Swarthmore a six-run cushion. Barron gave way to Bertrand in the seventh, who pitched a 1-2-3 inning to secure the shutout. Bertrand was also a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams scored twice in the second inning. The Bison got on the board with a two-out, two-run infield single. The Garnet responded with a pair of two-out runs of their own. Regan Valenzuela recorded an RBI single then Barone drove in the tying run with a double down the line in left.

- Nichols regained the lead with an RBI single in the third. Swarthmore loaded the bases with one out in its half of the inning but was unable to push a run across. The Garnet left the bases full again in the fourth.

- The Bison tacked on a key run in the sixth, scoring on a sacrifice fly to take a 4-2 lead. After failing to put a runner on base in the fifth and sixth, Swarthmore tried to rally in the seventh. McClure led off with a triple but the next three hitters were retired. McClure scored on a groundout but it was not enough for the Garnet.
