No. 29 Women’s Tennis Takes Down No. 34 NYU in First Win

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 29 Swarthmore College women's tennis team earned its first win of the season with a 5-2 victory over No. 34 New York University on Saturday night. 

Ella Strickler was the star of the match with victories in singles and doubles action. The sophomore paired with Riya Rao for a doubles-clinching win. She then went on to clinch the match with a victory in No. 5 singles. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES

- Nathalie Williams / Lola Diaz teamed up for a victory in No. 1 doubles. The pairing held on for a 6-4 win in their first match as doubles partners. 

- Strickler / Rao earned a point for the Garnet with a victory in No. 3 doubles. The pairing appeared in their third-straight match as they came up clutch with a 7-5 victory.



SINGLES
- Erin Li held on for a hard-fought victory in No. 2 singles. The first-year won the opening set 7-6 with an 8-6 tiebreaker, but fell 6-4 in the second set. Li then battled back with a 7-5 decision in a deciding third set. 

- Kathleen Shiffer bounced back with a win at No. 4 singles. The junior won her second-straight match with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over her NYU challenger. 

- Strickler sealed the win for Swarthmore with a win at No. 5 singles. The sophomore dropped the opening set 6-3, but answered back with a 6-0 decision in the second set. Strickler then held on for a 7-5 decision in the final set. 

- Lisa Messier closed out the match with another win for Swarthmore. The junior battled late into the night, but outlasted her opponent in three sets. Messier won the opener 6-0, but fell 6-4 in the second set. She then won the third set in a 10-4 tiebreaker. 

UP NEXT
The Garnet return to action against the Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday.
