Softball Takes Down Pair of Nationally-Ranked Teams, McClammy Breaks Home Run Record

SALISBURY, MD - The Swarthmore College softball team opened its 2025 campaign in impressive fashion with a pair of nationally-ranked wins over No. 16 University of Rochester, 9-2, and No. 13 Salisbury University, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon.

Olivia McClammy broke the program record for home runs with her 10th career long ball. The senior slugger broke a four-way tie between Michelle Walsh '98, Christine Sendelsky '09 and Kathryn Riley '10 to become the first player in program history to reach double-digit homers. McClammy went a combined 3-for-6 with four RBI and three runs in both games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- After a clean first inning from Lane Barron, Iris Barone got things started with a leadoff double down the left field line. The junior advanced to third on a ground ball, before coming home to score on a McClammy groundout, 1-0.

- Swarthmore took advantage of a pair of walks in the second inning. Avery McClure worked a leadoff walk to open the frame, then came around to score on a Barone sacrifice flyout. The Garnet threatened for more in the inning, but were unable to bring home a pair from scoring position, 2-0.

- Barron retired the side in the third inning, before escaping a jam in the fourth. After keeping the inning alive with a two-out double, Rochester singled up the middle and waved its baserunner home from second. However, Barone made an excellent throw from centerfield to nail the runner at home for the final out. Rochester then tied the game with another two-out rally in the fifth inning, 2-2.

- Barron retired the side in the sixth inning after Barone put away a base runner at second for her second outfield assist. Swarthmore then exploded for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to blow the game open. Barone singled home the first run, while McClammy brought home another with a knock. Emily Bertrand kept the line moving with a single through the right side before Jordan Jackson followed with a sacrifice fly. McClure then tacked on a pair with a double to left-center field and then Kate Borza singled up the middle to cap off the scoring, 9-2.

However, Goldberg struck out the next two batters swinging and got the final batter to foul out to end the frame, 2-0.

- Goldberg stranded a runner in scoring position in both the second and third innings to keep the Garnet in front. The first-year then cruised through the fourth with a 1-2-3 frame.
