CAMDEN, N.J. – The Swarthmore College baseball team fell behind early and could not recover in a 10-4 loss at Rutgers-Camden on Saturday afternoon.
The Scarlet Raptors jumped out to a 9-0 lead over the first five innings. The Garnet got on the board with three runs in the sixth but were unable to cut further into the deficit.
Aidan Sullivan went 2-for-4 at the plate for Swarthmore and he also scored a run.
Max Roffwarg drove in two runs while
Nathaniel Kittredge and
Andrew Firko had one RBI apiece.
Leor Kedar had the Garnet's lone extra-base hit with a triple.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rutgers-Camden opened the scoring with a three-run first. The home team tallied four hits in the inning and all three runs scored on singles. The Scarlet Raptors upped the lead to five in the third. They used a walk and two singles to load the bases before forcing in runs with a hit by pitch and a walk. Rutgers-Camden totaled two RBI singles and a sacrifice in the fourth to make it 8-0. Another run came across in the fifth to put the host up nine.
- Meanwhile, the Swarthmore offense struggled to get going with just three hits in the first five frames. The Garnet finally broke through in the sixth.
Aidan Sullivan had a one-out single,
Max Beadling drew a walk, and
Benjamin Buchman recorded a bunt single to load the bases. Sullivan came home on a groundout before
Max Roffwarg knocked in Beadling and Buchman with a single to get Swarthmore within six (9-3).
- The Scarlet Raptors got a run back in the bottom of the sixth with an infield RBI single. The Garnet made the score 10-4 in the ninth when they scored the final run on a groundout.
