Seventh-Inning Success Lifts Baseball Over Widener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team found its offensive momentum in the seventh inning in a 5-2 win against Widener University on Tuesday.

The Pride jumped to a 1-0 lead in the third but, after a quiet few innings, Swarthmore scored five in the seventh. Widener homered in the eighth but could not catch up to the Garnet.

Matthew Silvestre and Max Beadling both went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI apiece. Silvestre also scored a run. Aidan Sullivan went 1-for-2 with three walks and a run while five other players recorded a hit.

Ezra Schwartz, Ian Born, Zach Potthoff, and Steven Jungers all delivered scoreless outings on the mound.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Widener got on the board first with an unearned run in the third. The Pride scored on a two-out double to go ahead 1-0.

- After six scoreless innings for the Garnet offense, they found life in the seventh. Max Roffwarg was hit by a pitch, followed by a Zac Kahn single to put runners at first and second with one out. Kahn and Roffwarg advanced on a wild pitch, Wilson Henze walked, and Roffwarg scored on the second wild pitch of the inning to tie the game at one. With two outs, Silvestre singled up the middle to drive in two and give Swarthmore its first lead of the game, 3-1. A walk by Sullivan put two on for Beadling, who smacked a triple to center to extend the lead to four (5-1).

- A Widener home run in the eighth brought the Pride within three (5-2). The visitors then brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth but Jungers came through with back-to-back strikeouts to nail down his second save.
