Women’s Basketball Closes Out Non-Conference Slate with Victory at Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team closed out its non-conference schedule with a 58-52 victory at Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet held off a late Seagulls run to snap a four-game losing streak.

Anna Hansson put together back-to-back, career-high performances with 19 points against Salisbury. Earlier in the week, the junior went for a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds against Haverford College.

Alyssa Hayashi joined her teammate in double figures with 15 points. Hayashi and Hansson were a lethal combination with a combined 18 points in a pivotal third quarter.

The Garnet shot 35.5 percent as a team, while holding their opponent to 30.4 percent. Swarthmore flexed its muscles down low with a combined seven blocks. Norah Wingfield totaled a career-high five blocks, while Hansson added a pair.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Salisbury used a pair of three-pointers to jump out to a 10-4 lead at the midway point of the opening quarter. The Garnet answered back with a 10-5 advantage to close out the stanza. Carly Murphy and Katelyn Becker both hit critical three-pointers to fuel the team's run. The Seagulls saw their deficit shrink to one point at the end of the first quarter, 15-14.

- Swarthmore got off to a fast start in a second quarter dominated by defense. The Garnet opened the stanza on a 7-2 run, which included four points from Alyssa Hayashi. The Seagulls then countered with a three-pointer, while Wingfield split at the free throw line with 5:04 remaining. Both teams were held scoreless for the remaining five minutes of the quarter, 22-20.

- Hayashi and Anna Hansson combined for the first five points of the third quarter to put Swarthmore ahead by seven, 27-20. The Seagulls then rallied for an 11-4 swing to cut their deficit to two points with 1:34 left.

- The Garnet built their lead to five points after Hayashi closed a high-scoring quarter with an and-one layup, 42-37. Hayashi and Hansson both contributed nine points in the stanza - accounting for 18 of the team's 20 points.

- Swarthmore continued to feed Hansson in the paint. The junior tallied the first four points of the final quarter, before Elisa Fiore added back-to-back buckets to put the Garnet ahead by 13 points. Hayashi then closed out a 13-0 swing with a pair of free throws, 52-37.

- In desperate need of points, Salisbury ended its scoring drought with a pair of free throws at the 5:33 mark. The Seagulls scored their first field goal of the quarter with 3:40 left to end an eight-minute drought before exploding for 13-unanswered points to pull within a bucket with 1:23 left.

- With their backs against the wall, Norah Wingfield stopped the bleeding with a much-needed, three-point play to provide the Garnet with some breathing room. The senior muscled her way to a layup, before cashing in at the free throw line with 1:14 left. The Seagulls were held scoreless for the final minute of play.
