Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short at Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team dropped its season series to Washington College with a 43-37 loss on Wednesday night.

Jordana Sampson matched a career-high 10 points with seven rebounds in 36 minutes of action. The senior was excellent from the field, shooting 4-for-6 with a pair of made free throws.

The Garnet dug themselves into an early hole with a 27-13 deficit heading into halftime. Swarthmore clawed back into the game with a lopsided fourth quarter, but were unable to finish the comeback.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Swarthmore was held scoreless for a six-minute stretch, while Washington rallied for nine-unanswered points. Raven Richardson ended the team's drought with a jumper before halftime, but the Garnet were outscored 17-2 in the final eight minutes, 27-13.

- After the Shorewomen expanded their lead to a game-high 16 points, Anna Hansson sparked a 7-0 run to shrink Swarthmore's deficit to nine with 4:35 left. Washington ended the quarter with a 38-26 advantage.

- Swarthmore opened the fourth with five-straight points to start a 9-1 stretch. Alyssa Hayashi capped off the rally with a layup to cut the team's deficit to four at the 4:32 mark. However, the Shorewomen held on with a 4-2 advantage in the closing minutes.
