Women’s Tennis Drops Spring Opener to D-I Loyola

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team opened its spring slate with a 6-1 loss against Division-I Loyola University Maryland on Saturday night. 

Lisa Messier picked up the lone victory for Swarthmore in No. 6 singles. The first-year trailed early in the match, but battled back to force and win the tiebreaker. 

DOUBLES
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Swarthmore battled hard against a challenging opponent, but ended up conceding a point in doubles play. Kathleen Shiffer/ Nathalie Williams dropped a 6-3 decision in top doubles, while Erin Li/ Brianna Viets fell 6-1 in the No. 2 position.

- Ella Strickler/ Riya Rao put up a valiant effort in a competitive showdown at No. 3 doubles. The pairing kept the match close the entire way, but dropped a hard-fought 6-4 decision. 

SINGLES
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Williams held momentum early with a 6-4 victory in the opening set of No. 1 singles. Loyola then answered back with a 6-4 win in set two, before clinching the match with a 10-5 decision in the tiebreaking set. 

- The Garnet fought hard with another three-set showdown in No. 2 singles. After dropping the opening set, Li clawed back with a 6-3 win to force a tiebreaker. However, the first-year was outlasted 10-7 in a back-and-forth third set. 

- Shiffer fell short in No. 3 singles. The junior was edged out, 7-5, in a competitive opening set. Loyola then clinched victory with a 6-1 victory in set two. 

- Viets and Strickler both lost in No. 4 and No 5 singles, respectively. Viets fell to her opponent, 8-3, while Strickler was bested 8-4. 

- Messier had the highlight of the night for the Garnet with a gutsy win in No. 6 singles. Despite falling behind early in the match, the junior fought back to force a tiebreaker, 7-7. Messier led from start to finish in the tiebreaker with a commanding 7-3 advantage.
