COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's basketball team could not overcome a strong first half by host Ursinus College as the Garnet fell to the Bears, 75-59, on Saturday.
Ursinus shot 54 percent from the field in the opening half to build a 47-29 lead at the intermission. Swarthmore outscored the Bears in the second half but were unable to erase the deficit.
Four Garnet players scored in double figures, led by
Anna Hansson with 13.
Katelyn Becker and
Alyssa Hayashi each tallied 12 points and
Lillian Czub tied her career high with 10. Hansson and Hayashi grabbed a team-high six rebounds apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The score was even at seven with 5:34 remaining in the opening quarter. Ursinus then took control with a 16-3 run and led 23-10 with 1:24 to go. The Bears shot 6-of-8 with a pair of three-pointers during the stretch. Ursinus was in front 26-13 entering the second.
- After a Hansson jumper to begin the second quarter, the Bears tallied 10 unanswered to up the margin to 21 (36-15) at the 6:29 mark. Ursinus was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. Swarthmore followed with seven of the next nine to get within 16 (38-22) but it was the closest the difference became as the Bears took an 18-point advantage (47-29) into the locker room.
- The Garnet were unable to chip away at the deficit in the third, as both teams scored 15 points during the frame. Swarthmore had its chances, putting up 20 shots in the period but only converting on six. The Garnet posted a 60 percent rate (6-of-10) in the fourth but only bested Ursinus by two points in the stanza.
