Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Falls Short in Non-Conference Meeting at Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team dropped a tight matchup against Johns Hopkins University, 76-69, as the two Centennial powerhouses renewed its rivalry in a non-conference tilt on Saturday evening.

The Blue Jays led the entire way with the Garnet making several late runs in a competitive finish. Despite trailing by as many as 14 points, the Garnet found themselves within five points in the final 15-seconds of regulation.

Cal Hanson carried the load for the Garnet, scoring a team-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Eddie Paquette and Brady Kageyama also contributed double digits with 13 points, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Johns Hopkins got off to a fast start at home, beginning with a 12-4 run in the opening six minutes. The Garnet then started to chip away at their deficit with six-unanswered points. Matthew Maloney split free throws to open the run, while Jonathan Stump followed with a three-pointer and Hanson closed the run with a layup, making it 12-10.

- The Blue Jays began to distance themselves from Swarthmore with a 14-2 rally within a three-minute span. Hopkins used a pair of three-pointers to fuel its rally, building a 26-12 lead with 9:03 left.

- Hanson took over with six-straight points to bring his squad within eight. The senior drilled a much-needed triple to stall the Blue Jays' momentum, and then connected for an and-one layup to add three more on the following possession, 26-18.

- Johns Hopkins made one final run before halftime, entering halftime on a 12-6 swing in the closing six minutes. The home team enjoyed a 14-point advantage at the break, shooting a stellar 46.7-percent from the field in the opening half.

- Swarthmore executed out of halftime, opening with back-to-back buckets from Caleb Aurelien and Hanson to string together a 10-2 run. Following a Blue Jay basket, Kageyama countered with a driving layup, before a pair of Maloney free throws and a Stump layup brought the Garnet within two points, 42-40.

- Johns Hopkins slowly built its advantage back to double digits, taking a 54-44 edge with 10:18 left. Moments later, Nyle Coleman and Maloney contributed a pair of threes to shrink the Swarthmore deficit to six.

- The Blue Jays seemed in control down the stretch after a three-point play brought their lead to 10 points with 44-seconds left. However, the Garnet refused to go out quietly with Kageyama and Devin Burger both nailing three-pointers within 10 seconds of each other, making it 72-67. Swarthmore did everything it could to pull out more late-game magic inside Goldfarb Gym, but ran out of time, falling to its rivals 76-69.
