Men's Basketball Defeated by Farmingdale State on the Road

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team suffered an 87-72 setback at Farmingdale State College on Wednesday night.
 
The Rams used a 20-1 first-half run to take control of the game. The Garnet battled back and were within six with 6:15 remaining in regulation but Farmingdale put the game away with a 17-6 surge. The Rams forced 19 Swarthmore turnovers and recorded 14 steals, scoring 23 points off the miscues.
 
Caleb Aurelien and Eddie Paquette led the Garnet with 12 points apiece. Aurelien made all three of his three-point attempts and added a trio of free throws. He also tallied five rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and one steal. Devin Burger and Nyle Coleman recorded 11 and 10 points respectively.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Aurelien and Burger both drilled threes around a Farmingdale jump shot and Swarthmore led 6-2 just over a minute in. The Rams poured in nine unanswered to go in front 11-6 with 16:18 on the clock. The Garnet followed with seven of the next eight to gain a one-point edge (13-12) at the 11:10 mark. Coleman scored five of the seven Swarthmore points.
 
- Coleman sank a three and Jonathan Stump made a layup to give the Garnet a four-point advantage (21-17) with 7:58 to go in the first half. Farmingdale then went off for 15 consecutive points to start a 20-1 rally in which it went ahead 37-22 with 2:28 to play. The Rams shot 5-of-9 from the field, with a pair of three-pointers, and went 8-of-9 at the foul line. Swarthmore missed seven shots, including five threes, during its scoring drought. Burger hit a three for the final shot of the period and the Garnet trailed 41-28 at the intermission.
 
- Swarthmore came out hot to start the second half, netting 16 of the first 22 points to cut the deficit to three (47-44). Paquette led the way with seven points, Brady Kageyama drilled a pair of threes, and Cal Hanson also hit a triple. However, Farmingdale bounced back with a 12-4 stretch to go up 11 (59-48) with 11:00 left.
 
- The teams went back and forth for the next five minutes and the Garnet were able to close the gap to six (70-64) with 6:15 to go. The Rams, though, went on a 17-6 run to effectively put the game away, leading 87-70 with 20 seconds remaining. Farmingdale was 4-for-7 from the floor and 9-for-10 at the stripe while limiting Swarthmore to just 2-for-11 with four turnovers. Aurelien converted a pair of threes for the only Garnet points during the sequence.
