Men’s Basketball Comes Back Over Widener in 2025 Finale

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team battled back with a strong second half to defeat Widener University, 91-80, in its 2025 finale on Tuesday night.

The Garnet overcame an 11-point halftime deficit as they persevered for their second-straight win over the Pride. Swarthmore outscored the visitors 56-34 in the final stanza, besting Widener by 22 points.

Five players scored in double figures for Swarthmore with Cal Hanson's 18 points leading the charge. The senior was 8-of-12 from the field on the road to a season-high in scoring. Eddie Paquette contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Devin Burger, Brady Kageyama and Zander Jimenez all scored 11 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Widener opened the game with a 5-0 run before Paquette attacked the lane for the team's first bucket. The Pride took an 11-4 advantage, but the Garnet chipped away with a 6-1 rally to pull within a couple points, 12-10.

- The Pride scored eight-unanswered points to regain control over the game, taking a double-digit lead. Widener went on to expand its lead to 33-18 with 6:01 left.

- Swarthmore clawed within single digits after a Paquette layup capped off an 8-1 run. Jimenez then buried the team's lone three of the half to make it 40-31 at the 2:01 mark. The Garnet were able to pull within eight points of the Pride, but surrendered three-unanswered free throws to end the opening half, giving Widener a 46-35 edge.

- Burger got the Garnet off to a quick start to open the second half. The junior finessed his way to a bucket in the paint, grabbed a defensive rebound at the other end and then countered with a triple of his own. Hanson then earned a tough two points off a fastbreak bucket, while Kageyama hit a pair of technical free throws to pull Swarthmore within a bucket, capping off a 9-0 run to open the first 1:30 of the second half.

- Following a Widener bucket, Hanson tallied two-straight baskets before Paquette knocked down a triple to give the Garnet their first lead, 51-48. Moments later, Ryan Chu added another strike from long range to take a 54-50 advantage with 15:50 left.

- Widener used a 6-0 stretch to even the score, but Kageyama answered at the other end with a big-time three to regain the lead. After Paquette hit a three to take a six-point lead, the Pride kept chipping away to shrink its deficit to a point. Hanson then came away with a steal and went coast-to-coast for an important two points. The senior then added a jumper on the following possession to increase the team's lead to 74-69 with 5:34 remaining.

- Andrew Park stepped through traffic and earned a challenging two-points on a fastbreak layup, putting the Garnet ahead 78-72 at the 3:30 mark. Later in the half, Kageyama tallied a pair with an acrobatic bank shot from just outside the paint. He then followed with a couple free throws to pull ahead by 10 points in the final two minutes.
