Men’s Basketball Drops Close Contest to Misericordia

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's basketball team dropped a tightly-contested battle against Misericordia University, 70-64 on Wednesday night. The game featured six lead changes and six ties in a matchup that remained close from start to finish.

Eddie Paquette had another outstanding performance, logging a game-high 23 points with seven rebounds and three steals. The senior recorded his second-straight 20-plus point performance and his third of the season. He is averaging a career-best 17.3 points-per-game in the opening seven contests.

Matthew Maloney gave the Garnet excellent minutes off the bench. The rookie scored a season-high 13 points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Misericordia opened the game on a 7-0 run before Paquette slowed down the Cougars with a much-needed three. Brady Kageyama then banked in a jumper until Misericordia answered back with its second triple, making it 10-5.

- Moments later, the Garnet stormed back with seven-answered points to tie the score. Maloney provided a spark off the bench with a three-pointer and a jumper for consecutive Swarthmore scores. Caleb Aurelien then battled for a bucket down low to even the score, before Maloney and the Cougars exchanged threes to preserve the 15-15 tie.

- After another Misericordia three, Paquette dazzled the crowd with an acrobatic and-one layup. Kageyama then buried a triple to give the Garnet its first lead. However, the Garnet advantage was short-lived after the Cougars responded with its fifth three of the opening 10-minutes.

- Maloney continued to shine off the bench, adding his tenth point of the half on a jumper with 7:57 left. The Garnet stayed within an arm's length of the Cougars, eventually taking the lead with back-to-back buckets from Jonathan Stump and Nyle Coleman, taking a 29-28 advantage with 2:56 remaining.

- Swarthmore ended a seesaw of an opening half with a 34-32 advantage. Andrew Park gave the Garnet a late edge with a buzzer-beater three to close the stanza. The opening 20-minutes featured five lead changes and six ties with Misericordia's 7-0 start marking the biggest lead.

- The Cougars hot long-range shooting carried over into the second half, exiting the locker room with a 13-5 run, which featured a trio of triples. Layups from Paquette and Coleman helped cut Swarthmore's deficit to two points, bringing the score to 45-43.

- Misericordia took the biggest lead of the evening, using a 7-0 run to build a nine-point edge with 7:27 left. Following a Garnet timeout, Paquette got his squad back on track with a crucial three-pointer after Maloney fought down low for an offensive rebound.

- The Cougars maintained their hot shooting, answering Paquette's three with a long ball of their own. Misericordia took the first double-digit lead of the evening after an and-one layup with 6:01 remaining.

- With 2:26 left, Cal Hanson pulled the Garnet within five points after coming away with a steal and feeding a crafty bounce pass to Coleman on a fastbreak. Swarthmore came as close as four points to the Cougars, but were unable to put together enough stops to mount a late comeback.
