SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's basketball team bounced back with a 78-67 victory over visiting Marymount University on Saturday.
The Garnet used a 19-4 first-half run to take control of the game and they led the rest of the way. The Saints battled back in the second period, closing the gap to four multiple times, but Swarthmore held on for the win.
Eddie Paquette scored 15 points followed by
Cal Hanson and
Brady Kageyama with 14 apiece. Hanson also grabbed seven rebounds.
Jonathan Stump had a career game with eight points, seven boards, three blocks, and three steals while
Matthew Maloney also tallied eight points.
Caleb Aurelien corralled a team-high 10 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Marymount boasted a tenacious defense early on and got out to a 9-4 advantage in the opening five minutes.
Nyle Coleman drilled a three at the 15:02 mark to wake up the Garnet, as they scored seven of eight to take a slim 11-10 lead with 14:01 on the clock. Later, the Saints sank a three-pointer to take a one-point edge (16-15) with 11:57 remaining.
- Aurelien produced an "and-one" three-point play to spark a 19-4 Swarthmore rally, giving the home team a 34-20 advantage with 5:29 left in the half. Six players contributed to the surge, led by
Andrew Park with five points. The Garnet shot 6-of-11 during the stretch, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Defensively, Swarthmore limited Marymount to just 2-for-7 from the field. The Garnet remained in front, 39-28, at the break.
- After the Saints opened the second with a layup, Swarthmore scored seven of the next eight for its largest lead of the day (46-31) with 16:36 to go. However, Marymount battled back with 11 unanswered points to cut the deficit to four (46-42) at the 13:52 mark. The Garnet created separation again with an 8-2 run to make it 54-44 with 11:07 to play. Paquette totaled four points with Stump and Kageyama netting two apiece.
- The Saints bounced back once more, scoring 11 of the next 16 to get back within four (59-55) with 7:48 left. Stump hit a triple to begin a stretch of six Swarthmore points as the Garnet went back up double digits (65-55). Marymount closed the gap to four (67-63) for the final time with 3:47 to go. The Garnet then posted seven in a row, punctuated by a dagger three from Stump with 1:59 remaining, to lead 74-63.
