GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Swarthmore College men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the campaign on Wednesday night in an 81-74 decision at Stockton University.
The Ospreys used a 9-2 run at the end of the first half to take a 10-point lead (44-34) into the break. Stockton then held off the Garnet in the second period, never relinquishing the advantage and leading by as many as 11 on the way to the win. The home team had a strong night from the floor, shooting 51.7% with 11 three-pointers. The Ospreys kept Swarthmore to the perimeter, as 41 of the Garnet's 75 field goal attempts came from beyond the arc.
Eddie Paquette paced Swarthmore with a season-high 21 points. The senior added eight rebounds.
Brady Kageyama tallied 16 points and
Cal Hanson chipped in 11.
Nyle Coleman scored nine points while
Devin Burger grabbed a team-high nine boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams went back and forth early and were even at 17 with 11:35 on the clock. Stockton hit back-to-back threes to spark a 13-5 run and take a 30-22 lead with 6:18 remaining. Trailing 35-27 late in the frame, the Garnet scored five straight points to cut the deficit to three (35-32). Coleman drained a triple and
Matthew Maloney converted a pair of foul shots. However, the Ospreys answered with nine of the last 11 points of the half to lead by double digits (44-34) at the intermission.
- Swarthmore opened the second half with a 12-5 rally to get back within three (49-46) at the 17:10 mark. Paquette recorded eight points, including a pair of threes, with Hanson and Kageyama adding two apiece. Stockton again recovered, this time responding with eight in a row, including another set of consecutive threes, for its largest lead of the contest (57-46).
- The Garnet would not go quietly, putting together a 10-2 stretch to trail by three once more (59-56) with 11:29 to play. Kageyama led the way with five points, Hanson scored three, and
Isaiah Luckie netted two. However, the Ospreys stopped Swarthmore's momentum again with another eight unanswered points to lead 67-56 with 7:52 left. The Garnet only came within seven the rest of the way.
