Melnikov Wins ITA Regional Singles Title To Cap Historic Weekend

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Michael Melnikov came out victorious in championship singles on Sunday to put a bow on the Swarthmore College men's tennis team's weekend at the ITA Regional Tournament. The event was hosted by the University of Mary Washington.

Melnikov became just the second player in program history to win an ITA regional singles title, joining Greg Emkey who accomplished the feat in 1998. With the win, Melnikov receives an automatic bid to the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia later this month. It will be the second career trip to the event for the senior. He previously competed at the ITA's national tournament in 2022, his rookie season, after finishing as the regional runner-up.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Melnikov, seeded second, battled the number-one seed from Carnegie Mellon University in the final. Melnikov bested his opponent in the opening set, 6-3, before his foe was forced to retire due to injury.

ST. JOSEPH'S INVITATIONAL
- In addition, Cameron Samek represented the Garnet on the final day of the St. Joseph's Invitational on Sunday. The first-year earned an 8-4 triumph over Chestnut Hill College to win the consolation final in his bracket.
