No. 17 Women’s Soccer Overpowers McDaniel in Centennial Showdown

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 19 Swarthmore College women's soccer team rolled past McDaniel College with a dominant 4-0 victory on Saturday afternoon. The team also celebrated Team IMPACT Day where they celebrated their match, Eva.

Four different goal scorers tacked on opening-half tallies for the Garnet. Lauren Lior and Charlotte Carleton both provided early scores in the third minute, while Celia Kanellakos and Ava Gizzie added on scores in the 15th and 28th minute, respectively. Nicole Jensen was credited with a pair of assists on the afternoon as she showed off her excellent play-making skills.

Gizzie scored a goal in their sixth-consecutive game, tallying seven goals during the stretch. The junior matched a career-high for consecutive games with a goal to accompany their six-game streak as a rookie. Gizzie also collected seven goals during that six-game swing.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet struck early and often against its conference rival. Lior tallied the opening score off a feed from Jensen in the third minute. The sophomore touched the ball to Lior, who buried a strike to the top of the near post.

- Seconds later, Carleton notched the team's second tally of the third minute. McDaniel attempted to clear the ball out of the box with a header, but it instead found the chest of Carleton, who settled the ball and lobbed a shot past the leaping keeper. The opening two scores were 34-seconds apart, making it 2-0.

- Swarthmore maintained heavy pressure in the attacking zone, keeping its foot on the gas against the Green Terror. Lior nearly connected on her second score, but was robbed on an excellent leaping attempt from the keeper.

- Kanellakos joined the scoring with a goal in the 15th minute. The sophomore possessed a loose ball in the box, dribbled away from a couple defenders and then guided the ball through traffic and into the back of the net. Moments later, Kanellakos had another opportunity but rocketed a shot just high of the crossbar.

- Gizzie was responsible for the team's fourth goal with an assist from Jensen, who notched her second of the afternoon. Jensen set up the junior with a perfect pass to break them free inside the box. Gizzie did not waste the opportunity as they froze the goal keeper with crafty footwork and an elevated shot past the keeper.

- Swarthmore kept piling on the shots in a lopsided opening half. The Garnet overwhelmed their opponent with a 18-0 shot advantage, firing 10 shots on goal.

- Lila Travers stepped up and made the team's first save of the afternoon on a McDaniel free kick from just outside the box in the 74th minute. The senior stood strong and tacked on another save in the 86th minute, combining with Dahlia Bedward for the collective shutout.
